The smell of rain hangs in the air above Kirstenbosch's beautiful trees.
Pieter walks slowly over the narrow paths, his eyes sharp and on the lookout for the surprising appearance.
'n Plant, lank reeds as uitgesterf beskou, het moontlik een aand hier gespruit.
A plant, long considered extinct, possibly sprouted here one night.
The winter breeze tickles his cheeks as he comes closer to the spot where the rare plant was supposedly found.
Langs hom loop Annelize, haar hande diep in haar baadjiesakke.
Next to him walks Annelize, her hands deep in her jacket pockets.
She looks skeptically at the bushes around them, her feet almost silent on the damp ground.
She was always the one who didn't believe in coincidence.
"I'm not sure, Pieter," she says doubtfully.
"Dinge soos hierdie gebeur nie sommer net nie.
"Things like this don't just happen."
But Pieter, with his love of mysteries and plants, is determined.
"Ons moet probeer.
"We have to try.
As hierdie plant regtig hier is, is dit belangrik.
If this plant is really here, it's important.
We need to know why it suddenly appeared."
By evening, the sky is dark and still.
Die sterre flikkering bo hulle koppe.
The stars twinkle above their heads.
Pieter en Annelize sluip deur die tuin.
Pieter and Annelize sneak through the garden.
The sounds of the city faint in the background.
They stop in front of the spot where the plant was seen.
Pieter shines his flashlight over the ground and notices something glinting.
Amazed, he bends down and finds small pieces of paper and strange markings in the ground.
Annelize buk nader.
Annelize bends closer.
"Dit is notas!
"These are notes!"
" sê sy, verwonderd.
she says, amazed.
Footsteps slowly begin to approach behind them, the gravel crunching under heavy boots.
'n Groot figuur verskyn uit die skaduwees.
A large figure emerges from the shadows.
Hulle hou die keer asem op.
They hold their breath this time.
But then, to their surprise, they realize it is the old gardener, a legend in his own right, someone thought to be long satisfied with retirement.
"Waarom?
"Why?"
" vra Pieter, sy nuuskierigheid onstuitbaar.
Pieter asks, his curiosity unstoppable.
Die tuinier glimlag stil.
The gardener smiles quietly.
"This garden has its secrets," he says, "and sometimes it needs a little help to keep them alive.
This plant originated from this garden, and I believe the world needs it again."
Pieter and Annelize look at each other, understanding growing in their eyes.
Die raaisel is opgelos.
The mystery is solved.
The plant did not just happen to appear, but has been lovingly cared for all along.
As they leave the garden, Pieter's confidence feels stronger.
Annelize has learned that not every mystery has dark intentions, but sometimes just a wish to keep the past alive.
The moonlight regards the garden from above, as it always has, while Pieter and Annelize make their way home, filled with great excitement about the secret of the very precious plant of Kirstenbosch.
