The winds of the Arctic Tundra howl against the seals of the researchers' tent.
The world is a white, endless carpet of ice and snow.
Johan, the team leader, paces anxiously inside the tent.
He thinks of the radio that remains silent.
No signal, no contact with the outside world.
Die blizzard het hulle onverwags vasgekeer.
The blizzard has caught them off guard.
"We need to do something," says Johan, looking at Elsa and Martina.
Elsa, nuut in die span, is kundig.
Elsa, new to the team, is knowledgeable.
Haar oë blits van idees.
Her eyes flash with ideas.
Sy vou haar arms ferm oor haar bors.
She folds her arms firmly over her chest.
Martina, always calm, sits with a map on her lap.
She tries to divide the chaos outside into small, comprehensible parts.
"Johan, we need to fix the antenna," says Elsa.
"If we can just send out a short message...
Johan weet sy is reg.
Johan knows she is right.
But outside, the wind drives thick streams of ice and snow through the air like wild horses.
He feels the weight of responsibility on his shoulders.
Sy span vertrou op hom.
His team trusts him.
Die voorraad kos en brandstof raak min.
The supply of food and fuel is running low.
They must find a way to send an SOS.
"I'm going to try to repair the equipment," says Johan determinedly.
“Elsa, jy kom saam.
"Elsa, you're coming with me.
Martina, hou die tent dop.”
Martina, keep an eye on the tent."
With the wind slicing sharply against their faces, Johan and Elsa call to each other through the cold.
They push and pull until they reach the antenna.
Elsa's nimble fingers work quickly and purposefully while Johan tries to scrape the ice off the cables.
Hulle hande bewe, maar die vastberadenheid bly.
Their hands tremble, but their determination remains.
Net toe Johan begin twyfel, hoor hy Elsa se triomfantelike uitroep.
Just when Johan begins to doubt, he hears Elsa's triumphant exclamation.
"Dis reg! Probeer nou!"
"It's ready! Try now!"
With frozen fingers, Johan looks at the radio.
The light flickers, and a soft sound of static electricity fills the tent.
Hoop lig op in sy hart.
Hope rises in his heart.
They send out the distress signal, just in time before another wave of the blizzard descends upon them.
Terug in die tent kom die drie bymekaar.
Back in the tent, the three gather together.
Johan feels a shiver, but this time it's a different kind of cold; it's relief.
He feels the joy and pride in his team.
Finally, after hours of waiting, the answer comes.
'n Helikopter is op pad.
A helicopter is on its way.
Hulle sal gered word.
They will be rescued.
Johan kyk na Elsa en Martina.
Johan looks at Elsa and Martina.
He knows now that they are stronger as a team than ever.
When the last flash of the blizzard is over, and the rotor of rescue is audible from the sky, Johan looks at his team.
How they look into each other's eyes says more than words ever can.
Hulle het mekaar vertrou.
They have trusted each other.
Hulle het saamgewerk.
They have worked together.
The time in the Tundra will never be forgotten, and Johan now understands that being a good leader means to trust and to share.
The blizzards can come and go, but the bond forged in the cold is unbreakable.
