Jaco stands uncomfortably in front of the hallway of the psychiatric ward.

It is the day after New Year's Day, and the bright banners and balloons hanging everywhere make the place unusually cheerful.

  • Sy maag grom.

    His stomach growls.

He longs for a quick chocolate from the vending machine.

But Marinda, the dutiful nurse, keeps a hawk's eye on the staff's eating habits.

With the traditional route to the vending machine blocked by colorful decorations, Jaco decides to take a "shorter" path.

He opens a door he thinks will lead to the hallway, but instead, he finds himself in a small, dark storage room.

"A smart plan, Jaco," he mutters to himself, only to hear the door quietly, but decisively, close behind him.

Jaco raises his hand to the knob and tries to turn it.

Then he realizes the grim truth: the door is locked from the outside.

  • Hy frons en rol sy oë.

He frowns and rolls his eyes.

Without his snack, he is now also trapped.

  • Hy sug en dink aan Marinda.

He sighs and thinks of Marinda.

She's definitely going to make a joke about this one for weeks.

With a mix of despondency and determination, Jaco takes his phone out of his pocket and calls Marinda.

Meanwhile, Marinda stands by the tables where some patients cheer and chat about the new year's prospects.

Next to her sits Eben, who always has a witty remark ready.

  • "Marinda," Jaco se stem klink benoud oor die foon.

"Marinda," Jaco's voice sounds anxious over the phone.

  • "Ek is vasgekeer in die stoor vertrek. Kan jy help?"

"I'm stuck in the storage room. Can you help?"

  • Marinda lag en skud haar kop, haar plig is duidelik.

Marinda laughs and shakes her head, her duty clear.

"We're coming now, Jaco, stay calm," she answers with a smile that Eben immediately notices.

  • "Wag, wag," sê Eben met glimlaggende oë.

"Wait, wait," says Eben with smiling eyes.

  • "Ons moet ‘n reddingsdrama van hierdie maak.

"We have to make a rescue drama out of this.

  • Ons gee hom ‘n dramatiese telling af soos in ‘n fliek!"

Let's give him a dramatic countdown like in a movie!"

Marinda agrees, and together with Eben, they head to the storage room with the keys.

Before they open the door, Eben starts counting, "Ten, nine, eight..." the rest of the staff laughs and counts along.

At "one" they open the door and Jaco steps out, his face red with embarrassment, but he suppresses a laugh.

"The hero of the year!" declares Eben and pats Jaco lightly on the back while Marinda takes a photo of the whole story for future teasing.

Jaco's plans for a quick escape led to an exciting adventure, and he smiles now while the challenges of the ward suddenly don't seem so boring anymore.

He realizes that the unexpected things are sometimes the best part of his day.

As he walks back, self-satisfied, he is grateful for the company that makes the ward lively.
