The sun beats down fiercely over the Kaapse gated community, and a warm wind blows through the trees.
Liesl sits in her garden among the flowers, feeling the heat like an invisible blanket over her shoulders.
Her autoimmune disease makes her tired, and the heat makes it worse.
Maar Liesl is hardkoppig. Sy wil selfstandig bly.
But Liesl is stubborn. She wants to remain independent.
She is a dedicated teacher and doesn't like to ask for help.
Haar buurman, Johan, is 'n afgetrede paramedikus.
Her neighbor, Johan, is a retired paramedic.
He has time for his garden, and even in this heat, his roses are healthy and flourishing.
Johan sees Liesl looking drowsy, the sweat glistening on her forehead.
He has seen her struggle before. He smiles kindly and walks over to her.
“Liesl, it looks like you're not handling the heat well,” he says with compassion. “How about we make a plan?”
Liesl skud haar kop, ietwat koppig. “Ek is reg, Johan. Dankie. Ek wil nie ‘n las wees nie.”
Liesl shakes her head, somewhat stubbornly. “I'm fine, Johan. Thank you. I don't want to be a burden.”
Johan is geduldig.
Johan is patient. He knows the pride of people and knows that sometimes people just need a little encouragement.
“We all need each other,” he says softly. “I can bring out my garden hose, and we can water the place a bit. It will be cool and refreshing.”
Liesl haal diep asem.
Liesl takes a deep breath. The sun feels like a brick on her back.
Sy kyk na Johan, oorweeg sy aanbod. “Goed, miskien net vandag. Dit sal lekker wees.”
She looks at Johan, considering his offer. “Okay, maybe just for today. That would be nice.”
The two spend the next few hours under splashes of cold water.
They talk about the weather, the plants, and the children in her class.
Johan shares stories from his days as a paramedic, and Liesl laughs, forgetting for a moment about the heat and the illness she carries.
But the sun has other plans. The heat worsens, and although they pour water on the flowers, Liesl can no longer stand it.
She feels her legs wobble beneath her, the world spinning before her eyes, and she slowly sinks to the ground.
Johan is onmiddellik langs haar. Hy is kalm, gee haar 'n glas yskoue water.
Johan is immediately by her side. He is calm, and gives her a glass of ice-cold water.
He helps her up and guides her to his house, where the air conditioner is on.
Johan laat haar op die rusbank leun, vou 'n klam doek oor haar voorkop.
Johan lets her lean on the sofa, placing a damp cloth on her forehead.
“Jy het my reg gered,” fluister Liesl met 'n vermoeide glimlag. “Ek is so dankbaar, Johan.”
“You really saved me,” Liesl whispers with a tired smile. “I am so grateful, Johan.”
“Soorte mense moet mekaar bystaan,” antwoord hy. “Moenie bang wees om te vra nie. Daar is krag in gemeenskap, Liesl.”
“People need to support each other,” he replies. “Don't be afraid to ask. There is strength in community, Liesl.”
Daardie dag verander baie.
That day changes a lot. Liesl realizes that asking for help is not a sign of weakness.
Johan now visits her regularly, and they build a friendship that withstands the heat and the illness.
Liesl feels the strength and warmth of the community, a new sense of hope for the future.
And so, among the blooming flowers and under the Kaapse sun, she learns that true independence does not always mean doing everything alone.
