Pieter walks across the slippery floors of the Aegis Skyscraper.
Sy hart klop vinnig van opwinding.
His heart beats quickly with excitement.
Today is his chance to be the best tour guide in Kaapstad.
He smiles broadly and proudly begins to talk about the penguins of the Cape coast.
Die groep mense om hom loer nuuskierig.
The group of people around him looks curiously.
Especially Jannie, a small boy with bright eyes, hangs on Pieter's every word.
Pieter vertel hoe pikkewyne saamwerk in tolgroepe.
Pieter tells how penguins work together in teams.
He makes big gestures with his arms, as if he himself is a penguin.
Elna, his colleague, stands a little further away and rolls her eyes.
She knows Pieter likes to attract attention, but she understands why people like him.
He has a way of bringing stories to life.
Suddenly, something happens that Pieter never expected.
Midway through his exciting tale, he feels his shoelace get caught at the bottom of the escalator.
Hy haal diep asem en probeer kalm bly.
He takes a deep breath and tries to stay calm.
Hy wil nie 'n toneel maak nie.
He doesn't want to make a scene.
The people start murmuring and pointing at his trapped foot.
Pieter, with the most composure he can gather, bends down.
Sy gesig is bloedrooi van verleentheid.
His face is bright red with embarrassment.
He tries to subtly and slowly work his laces free.
Die roltrap beweeg steeds opwaarts.
The escalator keeps moving upwards.
He nods and smiles uncertainly at the tour group, as if it's all part of his plan.
Elna stap nader en sê gevat: "Het jy dalk 'n pikkewyn-truuk wat jy probeer wys?
Elna steps closer and says wittily, "Are you maybe trying to show a penguin trick?"
" Pieter frons liggies, maar maak 'n grap terug.
Pieter frowns slightly but makes a joke back.
"Well, penguins do step on their own wings often!"
Finally, with one firm motion, he loosens his laces.
Die groep juig.
The group cheers.
Pieter almost falls backward but catches himself just in time on the railing.
Jannie klap hande en lag.
Jannie claps his hands and laughs.
Pieter holds his arms triumphantly in the air.
"And that, ladies and gentlemen," he says with a broad smile, "is how a penguin climbs!"
" Die groep lag saam en klap hande.
The group laughs along and claps their hands.
Later, as the tour ends and the group departs, Pieter feels a fresh sense of satisfaction.
Hy besef dat perfek wees oorbeklemtoon word.
He realizes that perfection is overrated.
Die mense het sy menslike oomblik geniet.
The people enjoyed his human moment.
Nou weet hy dat 'n bietjie humor meer waardering bring as net 'n klomp feite.
Now he knows that a bit of humor brings more appreciation than just a bunch of facts.
Hy hoor Elna langs hom sê: "Nie sleg nie, Pieter.
He hears Elna next to him say, "Not bad, Pieter.
Miskien is daar uiteindelik hoop vir jou!
Maybe there's hope for you after all!"
They laugh together, as they watch the crisp Cape air linger.
Pieter realizes he likes just being Pieter, the friendly tour guide with a love for penguins and a shoelace that occasionally gets a bit stuck.
