Piet, Annelie, and Johannes walk through the colorful gates of the amusement park in Pretoria.

  • Die lente was in volle bloei.

    Spring was in full bloom.

The sun shines brightly and the scent of sweet melkkos lingers in the air.

  • Mense lag, kinders hardloop rond, en iewers draai 'n reusagtige reuzenrad stadigerig.

People laugh, children run around, and somewhere a giant reuzenrad turns slowly.

"Oh no," says Piet, looking at the large sign in front of him.

"I can't wait to go on the roller coaster!"

  • ""Ons almal weet jy hou daarvan," lag Annelie terwyl sy haar sonbril reg skuif.

"We all know you love it," laughs Annelie as she adjusts her sunglasses.

"Yes," says Johannes calmly, "but first our picnic.

  • Ek is honger.

    I am hungry."

They find a nice spot on the grass, under the shade of a big tree.

  • Die koel briesie waai sag oor hulle.

The cool breeze softly blows over them.

They open the picnic basket—they've packed all the treats.

Sandwiches, dried fruits, and even Piet's favorite, biltong.

But just as they begin to eat, there is an unpleasant surprise.

  • 'N reusagtige volstruis bars uit die struike.

A gigantic ostrich bursts out of the bushes.

It steps nervously closer, its eyes fixed on the picnic basket.

Suddenly the ostrich grabs the basket with its long neck and runs away.

  • "Nee!

    "No!"

shouts Piet, his hands in the air.

  • "Ons kos!

    "Our food!"

Piet doesn't like birds, but his love for food drives him to run after the ostrich.

Annelie looks at the ostrich and thinks quickly.

  • "Wag, ons het ekstra brood!

    "Wait, we have extra bread!"

she says, and starts tearing a piece to lure the ostrich.

Johannes walks calmly closer, trying to talk to the ostrich.

"We just want the basket," he says softly.

The ostrich looks unimpressed but just holds the basket tightly.

Annelie throws a piece of bread in the direction of the ostrich.

With a quick movement, the ostrich snaps at the bread.

  • Sy aandag is afgetrek.

    Its attention is distracted.

Johannes uses the chance to quietly move around the ostrich.

While it's busy eating, he suddenly grabs the handles of the basket.

  • "Het jy dit?

    "Do you have it?"

  • " vra Piet van 'n veilige afstand.

asks Piet from a safe distance.

  • Sy hart klop vinnig.

    His heart beats fast.

  • "Ja!

    "Yes!"

shouts Johannes triumphantly, as he brings the basket back.

They laugh and give each other a big hug.

Piet looks at the ostrich now happily eating the bread and smiles.

"They're not so bad," he admits.

  • "Ek het net goeie vriende nodig.

    "I just need good friends."

  • "Hulle sit weer onder die boom.

They sit again under the tree.

The afternoon sun sinks lower, and the roller coasters glide smoothly in the background.

  • So eindig hulle dag vol avontuur en 'n bietjie oorwinning.

So ends their day full of adventure and a little victory.
