Sofie smilede. "Det er chancen for hygge."

It was a rainy day in Copenhagen. Sofie and Mads stood in front of The Little Mermaid. They had a friend from England visiting. "What dreadful weather," said the friend. Sofie smiled. "It's a chance for coziness."

  • "Hygge? Hvad er det?" Vennen kiggede forundret.

"Coziness? What's that?" The friend looked puzzled.

Sofie and Mads looked at each other and chuckled.

"Let us show you what coziness is."

Sofie lavede varm kakao. Snart duftede huset af kakao og stearinlys.

The three of them headed to Sofie and Mads' apartment in Nørrebro. Mads lit some candles. Sofie made hot cocoa. Soon, the house smelled of cocoa and candles.

"Coziness is feeling at home," Sofie explained as she pulled the friend down onto the soft sofa.

"Coziness is being together," Mads added, displaying pictures from their trips in the old city and Tivoli to the friend.

"Coziness is enjoying the little things," Sofie said with a smile as she served the cocoa.

  • "Kakao på en regnvejrsdag? Det er hygge," forsikrede Mads.

"Cocoa on a rainy day? That's coziness," Mads assured.

  • Vennen forstod langsomt. "Så... hygge handler om at nyde livet?"

The friend slowly understood. "So... coziness is about enjoying life?"

  • Sofie og Mads nikkede.

    Sofie and Mads nodded.

  • "Hygge kan ikke oversættes. Det skal opleves," sagde Mads.

"Coziness cannot be translated. It must be experienced," Mads said.

"And now you've experienced it," Sofie concluded.

  • Vennen sad lidt.

The friend sat for a moment. Then the friend started to chuckle. "Thank you, I feel cozy, I think?"

All three burst into laughter. They talked and laughed until late into the night, the sound of their laughter, the smell of cocoa, and the glow of the candles creating a warm cocoon of coziness. The kind of cozy place that could only be found in a home - on a rainy day in Copenhagen.
