가을이 깊어가고 있었다.

Autumn was deepening.

차가운 바람이 대학 기숙사의 창문을 스치듯 지나갔다.

The cold wind brushed past the windows of the university dormitory.

진수는 책상에 앉아 열심히 책을 읽고 있었다.

Jinsu was sitting at his desk, studying diligently.

바로 코앞에 시험이 있어서 집중이 필요했다.

There was a test right around the corner, so he needed to concentrate.

그런데 그때, 방 안에서 이상한 소리가 들려왔다. "삐-삐-삐-" 무엇인가가 계속 울리고 있었다.

But just then, a strange noise came from inside the room. "Beep-beep-beep-" Something was continuously ringing.

진수는 고개를 들어 주변을 둘러보았다.

Jinsu looked up and glanced around.

옆에서는 혜진이 숨죽인 채 책을 덮고 있었다.

Next to him, Hyejin was holding her breath with her book closed.

"저 소리, 어디서 나는 거지?" 혜진이 물었다.

“Where is that sound coming from?” Hyejin asked.

"모르겠어. 뭔가 기분이 이상해. 퇴근하고 집에 왔는데, 아마도 기숙사 기계 문제인가 봐."

“I don’t know. It feels weird. I just got back home from work, and maybe it’s a dormitory machine problem.”

두 사람은 소리의 근원을 찾기로 했다.

The two decided to find the source of the sound.

책상을 뒤지고, 침대 밑을 들여다보고, 방 구석구석을 탐색했다.

They rummaged through the desk, looked under the bed, and searched every corner of the room.

그러나 소리의 정체는 여전히 알 수 없었다.

However, the origin of the noise was still unknown.

진수는 걱정이 됐다.

Jinsu started to worry.

이제 시험이 얼마 남지 않았는데, 이대로는 집중할 수 없었다.

The test was approaching, and he couldn't focus with this going on.

혜진은 고민에 빠졌다.

Hyejin pondered.

"우리 오늘이 중추절이잖아, 뭔가 특별한 계획을 세워보지 않을래? 여기서 소리나 찾지 말고 잠시 나가서 산책이라도 하자."

“It's Chuseok today, why don’t we plan something special? Let’s not look for the sound here; let's go out for a walk.”

"그래도 이 소리를 해결해야 할 것 같아. 내가 더 찾아볼게," 진수는 대답했다.

“But I think we need to solve this sound issue first. I’ll keep looking,” Jinsu replied.

그는 혜진과 함께 음식을 나눠 먹으며 잠시나마 쉼을 취하고 싶었지만, 소리가 계속 신경 쓰였다.

He wanted to take a break and share food with Hyejin, but the sound kept bothering him.

마침내, 진수는 중요한 스터디 그룹 시간까지 포기하며 소리의 근원을 찾기로 결심했다.

Finally, Jinsu decided to forgo his important study group time to find the source of the sound.

힌트는 없다.

He had no hint.

그러나 집요하게 문을 열어보던 중, 옷장 속 깊이 놓인 작은 기계를 발견했다.

Persistently opening doors, he discovered a small device deep in the closet.

그것은 오래된 연기 감지기였다.

It was an old smoke detector.

배터리가 다 되어가며 신호음을 내고 있었던 것이다.

The battery was running low and emitting a signal sound.

"내가 찾았다!" 진수가 외쳤다.

“I found it!” Jinsu exclaimed.

혜진은 놀란 듯 웃음을 지으며 다가왔다.

Hyejin approached with a surprised smile.

"진짜 너 대단해!" 혜진은 말했다.

“You're amazing!” she said.

배터리를 새것으로 교체하고 난 후, 방이 다시 조용해졌다.

After replacing the battery with a new one, the room became quiet again.

혜진은 웃으며 진수에게 제안했다. "중추절이니까 우리 작은 축제를 열어보자. 쉬는 것도 중요해."

Hyejin, smiling, suggested to Jinsu, “Since it's Chuseok, let's have a small celebration. Resting is important too.”

진수는 제안에 기꺼이 응했다.

Jinsu gladly agreed to the suggestion.

두 사람은 함께 한국 간식과 떡을 나누며 짧지만 따뜻한 시간을 보냈다.

The two shared Korean snacks and tteok, spending a short but warm time together.

진수는 그제야 깨달았다. 시험은 중요하지만, 마음의 여유와 주변 사람들과의 교류 또한 그에 못지않게 중요하다는 걸.

Jinsu then realized that while the test is important, having peace of mind and interacting with people around him are just as important.

가을의 차가운 공기 속에서 따뜻한 웃음소리가 기숙사 복도를 가득 채웠다.

Amid the cold autumn air, the warm laughter filled the dormitory hallway.
