Rīgas Centrāltirgus hums and bustles like a moon full of bees.
Cilvēki steidzas ar maziem ratiņiem, sāk meklēt ziemas saldo izstrādājumus, un zemāk esošie jumti uzsūc daudz siltuma no andeles.
People hurry with small carts, starting to search for winter's sweet treats, and the roofs below absorb much warmth from the bustle.
Elves, gingerbread, and a thick blanket of snow on the walls ensure nobody forgets the approach of Christmas.
The air smells of cinnamon and oranges, while a merry rain of voices skips around the space like a cheerful oddball.
Inese ir tirgū agrā rītā.
Inese is at the market early in the morning.
Viņai jāuztaisa sava slavenā saulgriežu zupa.
She needs to make her famous solstice soup.
Viss jau ir sagādāts, tikai viens īpašs ziemas ingrediens trūkst – tas piešķir zupai garšu un sirdi.
Everything is ready, except for one special winter ingredient – it gives the soup its flavor and heart.
Viņa ir dzirdējusi, ka pie liela tirdzniecības galda šis retais saknes dārzenis gaida pircēju.
She has heard that at a large market stall, this rare root vegetable awaits a buyer.
Tomēr viņai blakus nostājas Māris.
But next to her stands Māris.
He gazes at the same table with hopeful eyes.
Māris ir dzirdējis, ka šis dārzenis ir īpašs ziemas afrodīzijs.
Māris has heard that this vegetable is a special winter aphrodisiac.
Viņš vēlas iegādāties to savām romantiskajām vakariņām, lai iepriecinātu savu iepatikušo dāmu.
He wants to buy it for his romantic dinner to please his lady friend.
Kad pārdevēja ceļ ingredientu, sākas īsta sacensība.
When the vendor lifts the ingredient, a real competition begins.
"Divdesmit eiro," saka Inese.
"Twenty euros," says Inese.
"Divdesmit pieci," ātri piedāvā Māris.
"Twenty-five," Māris quickly offers.
"Trīsdesmit!
"Thirty!"
" Inese neatpaliek.
Inese keeps up.
Māra seja sārtē, viņš ir apņēmies.
Māris's face blushes; he is determined.
Tad Inese izdara soli uz priekšu.
Then Inese makes a step forward.
"Inese," viņa saka draudzīgi, "tu saproti, kas tas ir?
"Inese," she says kindly, "do you understand what this is?"
" Māris pakrata galvu, izrada šaubas.
Māris shakes his head, showing doubt.
Inese izvelk no iepirkumu somas pavārgrāmatu ar skaisto zupas recepti, skaidri parādot dārzeņa nozīmi.
Inese pulls a cookbook with a beautiful soup recipe out of her shopping bag, clearly showing the vegetable's significance.
Māris smaida neskaidri.
Māris smiles uncertainly.
"Es domāju, ka tas padara par īpašu romantisku vakaru," viņš saka nedaudz apkaunojies par savu kļūdu.
"I thought it would make for a special romantic evening," he says, a little embarrassed by his mistake.
Tad abiem parādās smaidi, un viņi sāk smieties.
Then smiles appear on both their faces, and they begin to laugh.
"Galu galā," Māris teasliņu, "vai tev nevajag daudz vairāk nekā mīlestību zupā?
"After all," Māris teases, "don’t you need much more than love in a soup?"
" Inese piekrīt, un viņi izdara kļūdas labošanas plānu.
Inese agrees, and they make a plan to correct the mistake.
Viņi ierunājas, vienojot dalīt šo dārzeņu, lai abi varētu sagatavot kaut ko īpašu.
They chat, agreeing to share this vegetable so both can prepare something special.
And when the holidays arrive, both sides are satisfied with night after night of solstice feasts, one through friendship, the other through the most delicious soup.
Rīga turpina skanēt, un divi cilvēki dalās priekā un ziemas garšās.
Rīga continues to hum, and two people share joy and the flavors of winter.
