Quando chegaram à torre, ele percebeu o seu grande erro: esqueceu-se da comida.

Carlos, o amigo sempre pronto a ajudar — ou a distrair — estava com ele.

Fazia piadas sem parar, enquanto Hugo começava a suar sob o casaco grosso.

Ele pediu a Carlos para distrair Rita.

"Conta-lhe sobre a história da torre," sugeriu Hugo, enquanto começava a afastar-se.

Carlos acenou com um sorriso travesso.

Carlos nodded with a mischievous smile.

"Não te preocupes.

"Don't worry.

Eu tomo conta dela.

I'll take care of her.

Mas não demores!"

Hugo correu pela calçada, passando pelos turistas que tiravam fotos.

Hugo ran along the sidewalk, passing tourists who were taking pictures.

Encontrou um pequeno café, poucos metros mais adiante.

He found a small café a few meters ahead.

Explicou rapidamente a situação ao homenzinho por trás do balcão.

He quickly explained the situation to the little man behind the counter.

Com um sorriso compreensivo, o senhor ajudou-o a preparar uma pequena seleção de petiscos: pastéis de nata, queijadas e um pouco de pão fresco com queijo.

Ela cruzava os braços, olhando para Carlos que, apesar de cheio de entusiasmo, parecia estar a ficar sem factos históricos.

She was crossing her arms, looking at Carlos who, despite his enthusiasm, seemed to be running out of historical facts.

"Hugo," disse Rita ao ver o namorado aproximar-se.

"Hugo," said Rita upon seeing her boyfriend approaching.

"Estava quase a ir buscar-te."

"I was about to go look for you."

Hugo sorriu, meio envergonhado, meio triunfante.

Hugo smiled, half embarrassed, half triumphant.

"Desculpa a demora.

"Sorry for the delay.

Tive... uma pequena aventura."

I had... a little adventure."

Estendeu os sacos, revelando o seu tesouro improvisado.

He extended the bags, revealing his improvised treasure.

Rita não pôde deixar de sorrir.

Rita couldn't help but smile.

"Não é um piquenique tradicional, mas é único," disse ela, tocando levemente no braço de Hugo.

"It's not a traditional picnic, but it's unique," she said, lightly touching Hugo's arm.

Carlos soltou uma gargalhada.

Carlos burst into laughter.

"Estás salvo, amigo.

"You're saved, my friend.

Mas da próxima vez, faz uma lista!"

Os três sentaram-se no chão de pedra fria, partilhando risos e os petiscos.

Entre o vento e as suas gargalhadas, a Torre de Belém parecia aprovar a pequena festa, voltando ao mesmo tempo uma estátua solene por fora e um refúgio acolhedor por dentro.

E enquanto o sol começava a descer no horizonte, Hugo fez uma resolução silenciosa para o Ano Novo: planear melhor e valorizar as imperfeições que tornam a vida especial.
