But something went wrong.

В своих попытках стать героем вечера Николай случайно уронил зажжённую спичку не туда.

In his attempts to become the hero of the evening, Nikolai accidentally dropped a lit match in the wrong place.

Она упала прямо на его пикниковое одеяло.

It fell straight onto his picnic blanket.

Огонёк быстро вырвался и начал плавить ткань. Запах жжёной матери слился с шумом паники.

— Ой! — всполошился Николай, бросаясь тушить одеяло ногами.
